Gary Goodman has been a used and rare book dealer in Minnesota for nearly forty years. In 1982, he wandered into a used-book shop in East St. Paul that was going out of business, little dreaming that he would that day transform from a psychiatric counselor into the store’s new owner. He later co-founded St. Croix Antiquarian Booksellers and the Stillwater Book Center in Stillwater, Minnesota, closing the bookstore in 2017 after 27 years.
In 2021, the University of Minnesota Press published The Last Bookseller: A Life in the Rare Book Trade, an account of the used and rare book business during its final Golden Age. It is both a memoir and a history of booksellers and book scouts, criminals and collectors. Goodman is also the co-author of The Stillwater Booktown Times (1996) and The Secret History of Golf in Scotland (2006).
