Nick Wilding on Forgeries: Seeing Double: Oh Heavens!
January 13 @ 12:30 pm CST
Sponsored by The Caxton Club
Jan 13, 12:30 Central Time/1:30 Eastern Time
Nick Wilding teaches a course at Rare Book School called “Forgeries, Facsimiles & Sophisticated Copies” and we’ll be attending for an hour or so as he talks about documents that delighted and then disappointed. To tell the story he draws a remarkable cast of characters. One of the world’s most revered scientists – a person who is so famous that he is instantly recognized by only his first name. Document dealers. Prestigious libraries. Authenticators. Prevaricators. And more. It’s every collector’s bête noire and every attendee’s best bet.
Nick Wilding is a professor of history at Georgia State University. Much published, he has held fellowships at Stanford, Cambridge, Columbia, the American Academy in Rome, and the Cullman Center at the New York Public Library. He gave a very popular talk to the Caxton Club years ago; whether you caught it or missed it, here’s another chance! If you like a terrific detective story that takes you from the era of fedoras and trench coats to the study of manuscripts and watermarks, then this program is for you. Please register if you’d like to see this program, even if you can’t attend at 12:30 on January 13. After the program, all registrants will receive an email offering an opportunity to request a link to a recording of the complete program.
