An impulse purchase of de Quincey’s English Opium Eater in a used bookstore in London sparked a lifelong interest in drugs and their influence on culture. This journey has led him to consider how drug experimentation has shaped literary and musical traditions\, criminal justice systems\, and the treatment of ethnic and cultural minorities. \nPresenter: George Snook: My earliest memories are of a succession of Boston and Cambridge apartments. My father was in medical school\, my mother was the breadwinner\, and I was in school at the age of two. After completing my MA in European History in 1975\, I began a career in teaching. In 2021\, at the age of seventy-one\, I retired. \nFor as long as I can remember\, I have loved the study of the past. My father and mother certainly encouraged this through their passion for travel and collecting. As a child\, much of what I read was historical fiction and biography; history was a grand adventure. Beyond the classroom\, I have indulged my interest in history in several ways. I have volunteered on archaeological digs in Europe; I have participated in medieval and Revolutionary War re-enactment groups; I have taken post-graduate courses in Arts History\, Criminology\, and literature; I have traveled whenever and wherever the means and opportunities presented themselves\, and I have collected rare books\, antiques\, and\, of course\, manuscripts. \nSince retiring\, my wife and I have purchased a rambling colonial farmhouse in Massachusetts\, and we split our time between it and our apartment in New York. Mary Tudor has always enjoyed a reputation of having received a humanist education. Of the antique texts associated with Mary\, the ancient Greek philosopher Plutarch stands out. Mary was advised to follow many of Plutarch’s precepts\, and received dedications of three Plutarch translations. This talk will look at the role of Plutarch in Mary’s education and in the Tudor court. She has published three monographs:Mary I and the Art of Book Dedications: Royal Women\, Power\, and Persuasion (2015); Princesses Mary and Elizabeth Tudor and the Gift Book Exchange (2021); and Anne of Cleves: The Historical and Cultural Legacy of a Queen\, which was just published with Routledge in July 2026. She has edited or co-edited seven volumes on Mary I\, Shakespeare\, and queenship. She consulted on the recent Six Lives exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Valerie is currently editing volumes on Tudor myths\, Mary I and humanism\, adaptations of the Tudors\, and the Tudors represented in public and heritage sites. She is currently working on a short form monograph on Queen Mary I’s self-fashioning through the use of her coronation ring.

DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by NOBS \nThis is the year of Toni Morrison and all over Ohio bookclubs and organizations have been creating programs to honor one of Ohio’s greatest writers and the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Toni Morrison\, author and editor\, was born in Lorain\, Ohio in 1931 and her novels and nonfiction works went on to win the Pulitzer Prize\, the National Humanities Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  NOBS also wanted to celebrate her legacy so join us in this month’s forum either in person or via Zoom.  Please note registration for Zoom is required.\n\nThick Love or None at All:  Toni Morrison on Love\nwith Dr. Meredith Gadsby\nThursday\, August 27\n7-8:30 pm\n\nDr. Gadsby is Chair of the Africana Studies Department at Oberlin College and Conservatory\, where she teaches the literature of Africa and the African Diaspora.  She is the author of Sucking Salt: Caribbean Women Writers\, Migration and the Politics of Identity (U Missouri Press).   Dr. Gadsby is member of the Toni Morrison Society and served as faculty liaison to the TMS when it was based at Oberlin College.  Originally from Queens\, NY\, she has lived in NE Ohio for 26 years.  Dr. Gadsby teaches a Toni Morrison Seminar at Oberlin\, introduces her students to Morrison in her classes\, and writes about her body of work extensively.\n\nWe’ll meet at Loganberry Books at 7:00 PM.
