September 11: Tim Gress on Collector Burton Emmett and American Book Design. In this virtual talk, Tim Gress, a PhD student and Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present on Burton Emmett, an early twentieth-century advertising executive whose passion was collecting beautifully designed books. September 14: Declaration of Independence Printings. The 250th American birthday year’s scrutiny of the Declaration of Independence’s evolution, from rough drafts to widely disseminated and strategically edited printings, is shedding light on the document’s original producers and consumers, shifting interpretations, and enduring influence and enigmas. A panel of scholars will present their new Declaration findings: Michael Auslin (Stanford University) and Grolier members John Bidwell (Morgan Library & Museum curator emeritus), Dan Lipcan (director of Peabody Essex Museum’s Phillips Library) and Ted Widmer (CUNY). September 14: FABS Handpress Era Group. "A 1510 Florentine Pocket Classic and Its Readers." This presentation examines a remarkable copy of the 1510 Florentine Giunta edition of Justin and Florus, a small-format classical text with an unusually rich history of use. Dozens of its leaves carry sixteenth-century annotations in Latin and French, written by several hands, and an ownership inscription raises the intriguing possibility of a connection with the Vasari family. Its present state offers another surprise: the text block is wrapped in a detached incunable leaf. The talk will reconstruct the book’s physical history, readership, and provenance, showing how a single early printed volume can preserve several layers of Renaissance book culture. September 14: Manuscript Mondays: "The Handwritten Provenance of Fore-Edge Paintings" Fore-edge paintings have existed for centuries, but what do we really know about these hand-painted works of art? Dr. Harrison Wick will talk about his exploration of known fore-edge painting collections and the discovery of handwritten documentation found in the books, sometimes, unbeknownst to collectors. September 22: The Publications of the Hroswitha Club. Scholar Stacie Vos will present on the women bibliophiles organization, the Hroswitha Club, focusing on two of their publications to argue that the group was both more inclusive and more focused in their interests than the record suggests. September 23: Pioneers in Hand Papermaking: 50 years of Innovation at Dieu Donné. Curator Susan Gosin and artist Tricia Wright will present on this new exhibit that celebrates Dieu Donné’s 50 years of innovative handmade paper art. (The Grolier Club)
September 26: Charles W. Chestnutt Symposium (In Person). This one-day symposium will feature presentations by several scholars on Charles W. Chestnutt, arguably the most important African American author publishing between Reconstruction and the Harlem Renaissance. Chesnutt Digital Archive, The Cuyahoga County Public Library, and the Cleveland Public Library)
September 30: Curator’s Talk: Pioneers in Hand Papermaking. Curator Cynthia Nourse Thompson will speak with artist Lesley Dill, poet Tom Sleigh, and printer Peter Kruty, who collaborated, along with master papermaker Paul Wong, at Dieu Donné to create the book, I Had a Blueprint of History. The conversation will highlight the themes of working together as an ensemble to translate the written word into image, and handmade paper’s relationship to print and book that is echoed throughout the entire exhibition.
