About this event
Leonard Marcus will give a lecture on “The Modernist in the Nursery: How Author/Illustrator Dorothy Kunhardt Made the Picture Book New,” Best known for Pat the Bunny (1940), Dorothy Kunhardt turned the children’s publishing world on its ear as the creator of 40 innovative books whose jaunty game-like narratives and faux-naif art slyly expressed her affinity for modernist provocation and grasp of the latest theories of childhood development.
In this illustrated talk, historian and Grolier Club member Leonard S. Marcus will take a fresh look at this under-appreciated visionary’s legacy, which is also the subject of a new book he has coauthored, Dorothy Kunhardt: Collected Works (Steidl/Meserve- Kunhardt Foundation), with ephemera, drawings, unpublished manuscripts, and more.
This will be a live online event, and all attendees will receive an email with the link the day of the event. If you’ve not received a link by 9:00 am Eastern time, please check your spam folder.
For those unable to join us for the session, the lecture will be recorded and made available a few weeks after the event on the Grolier Club’s Vimeo page: https://vimeo.com/user4535612.
