Grolier Club Virtual Tour of the San Francisco Center for the Book

April 28, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Sponsored by The Grolier Club

Kathy Walkup will offer a behind-the-scenes tour of an artists’ books exhibition at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

A virtual tour of Possibilities: When artists’ books were young, a show at the San Francisco Center for the Book, will be led by Grolier member Kathleen Walkup. In the 1970s, activists brought a broad range of disruptions to the old order. Women of second-wave feminism demanded representation in galleries, museums, textbooks, history and the canon. Possibilities: When artists’ books were young explores works that women created in the newly-burgeoning field of artists’ books and examines the movement of women of color into the medium in the late 1980s. The show, on view through May 1st, brings together 37 artists’ books, posters and paintings by 32 artists. Walkup’s virtual walk-through will be followed by Q&A.

Walkup, a writer, lecturer and letterpress printer, joined the Grolier Club in 2020. In 2011 she curated the club’s show Hand, Voice & Vision: Artists’ Books at Women’s Studio Workshop. Her research interests focus on the history of women and printing and conceptual practice in artists’ books. Her essay on the women of the Distaff Side appeared in Making Impressions: Women in Printing and Publishing (The Legacy Press, 2020). She is Professor Emerita at Mills College, where she held the inaugural Lovelace Family Chair in Book Art.
